✈️ Do You Need a Real ID to Fly in 2025?
What North Carolina Residents Should Know
Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID or a valid passport to board domestic flights in the United States. For many North Carolina residents, that means visiting the DMV — and finding an appointment is getting harder by the day.
If you still need a REAL ID, sign up for DMV appointment alerts to find earlier cancellations and book your spot sooner.
What Is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a federally compliant version of your NC driver's license or ID card, marked with a gold star in the corner. It’s part of a post-9/11 federal law designed to increase identity security. Without one, you won’t be allowed through TSA security for domestic flights — unless you show a valid passport or other federally accepted ID.
What Documents Do You Need?
- ✔ One proof of identity (e.g., valid passport or birth certificate)
- ✔ One proof of Social Security (e.g., Social Security card or W-2)
- ✔ Two proofs of North Carolina residency (e.g., utility bill, lease agreement)
- ✔ Legal name change documentation (if applicable)
Do You Actually Need a REAL ID?
Yes — unless you plan to carry your passport every time you fly domestically. The TSA will turn away travelers who can’t provide federally approved identification starting May 7, 2025.

Why It’s So Hard to Book an Appointment
NC DMV slots fill up weeks in advance, especially at high-volume offices in Charlotte, Raleigh, and Durham. Many residents have turned to services like ours to get real-time alerts when cancellations open up.
