How to Replace a Lost or Stolen North Carolina Driver's License
Losing your license is stressful — but North Carolina makes it fairly simple to get a replacement. Whether it’s lost, stolen, or damaged, here’s how to get a duplicate license fast.
Replacement Options
1. Online Replacement
You can request a duplicate online through the myNCDMV portal if:
- Your license is valid (not expired, suspended, or canceled)
- You know your driver license or ID number
- Your photo on file is less than 5 years old
Note: A $3 transaction fee and 1.85% card processing fee apply.
2. In-Person Replacement
Visit an NCDMV driver license office if:
- You don’t know your license number
- You need to update personal info like your name
- Your license is expired, suspended, or canceled
Bring the proper identification documents and payment for the replacement fee.
Required Documents
- Proof of identity (e.g., birth certificate or passport)
- Proof of Social Security number (e.g., SSN card or W-2)
- Proof of residency (e.g., utility bill or lease agreement)
All documents must be original or certified copies.
Temporary Driving Certificate
After applying, you’ll receive a temporary driving certificate valid for 20 days. Your new license will be mailed to your address on file.
Tips and Reminders
- Report theft: Not required, but helps protect against identity fraud
- Check eligibility: Confirm you qualify for online replacement before heading in
